Putting The Forward Roll To Use

Now that we’ve covered two of the most used cross-picking patterns, let’s put them to use in a simple arrangement of You Are My Sunshine. We’ll start with the forward roll, and then move on to the backward roll. Here we go:

Notice that when using the forward roll the melody notes tend to be in the lower part of the chord. When playing this style of music you want to let the notes ring as much as possible, but you’ll want to accent the melody notes to draw out the melody as much as possible. So go try it out, and next time we’ll focus on the same song with the backward roll in – Putting The Backward Roll To Use.
