David Grier Plays Soldiers Joy Part Two

This is the second part of a series of posts that will be transcriptions of each of David Grier’s* solos from this video posted on Fretboard Journal. If you didn’t see the first one, you can find it here.  In the video he starts with a moderate tempo, and continues to increase the tempo with each variation. There are a lot of interesting musical ideas in this solo that you can apply to other tunes. Not only is there syncopation, but also anticipation in a Carter-esque Style, which can (and does) add a lot of excitement to the solo. You can download a printable pdf version here.

*David Grier, in my opinion, is one of the best cross-pickers, if not the best, in the world. Anytime I can get to see him play is such a joy!
